Differences
·         WhatsApp does not need usernames and passwords. It uses your phone number as your ID. That is why it is very easy to setup. Moreover, you do not have to worry about forgetting passwords. In fact, no requirements of usernames and passwords/PIN are one of the most reasons behind WhatsApp’s popularity.

On the other hand, BBM need a PIN to setup. You will have to possess an email ID to create a new BBM ID.

BBM vs WhatsApp

·         WhatsApp do not need to manually add contacts. It searches your phone book and if any of these numbers have a WhatsApp ID, it will be automatically added.
BBM cannot auto-detect contacts. One needs to add them manually.

·         BBM shows if a message send by you has been read or not. WhatsApp can only show the message delivery but there is no option to know the recipient has read your message or not.
·         WhatsApp have many more emoticons than BBM. WhatsApp is also more customizable.
·         BBM has a ping button which is used to get quick reply. There is no such thing in WhatsApp.
·         File sharing is much better in WhatsApp. You can directly share photos and videos from the chat window but it is not so convenient in BBM.
·         WhatsApp has much more users base than BBM.
·         You cannot register WhatsApp without your phone number. So, it is impossible to register on it from other’s phone. It is not the case for BBM.

Similarities

Both are popular IM apps. Both of these apps have voice and video chat support. BBM and WhatsApp have apps for multiple platforms. There is option of changing profile pictures and change status messages in both of these IM services.
